Last month I shared a rather long bucket list of items I wanted to do during the last few weeks of the month. I managed to do most of them, but the top of my priority list was fixing up my studio space.
Up until we bought our condo during the summer of 2014 I had been working at a desk in the corner of my bedroom or our kitchen table. It just wasn’t working, so I was really excited when we moved and I finally had a dedicated space that was all mine. The only problem was it ended up as a dumping ground for things that didn’t really have a home, and by the end of last year being in there stressed me out so much from all the clutter piled on my desk and on the floor that I rarely actually worked there.
I knew something had to change.
So while my parents watched Eve for three days, I got to work. While Sam worked on repainting and fixing up our bathroom, I spent this time sorting, recycling, throwing out, and clearing out my space. I finally went through the ginormous bag of papers to shred that Sam and I had accumulated over the year, as well as eight years of pay stubs. (You can see the what the process looked like on my Facebook page.)
It wasn’t in my original plan, but I ended up painting most of the room, a calming blue. (It’s amazing how efficiently you can paint a room when your time is limited! I hung up art work and some shelves for displaying little objects that have meaning to me. And perhaps my favorite thing, I used chalkboard paint for the first time and made a little chalkboard over my workbench.
This is the end result:
Most of what I used to decorate the space Sam and I already had. The wooden crates on my desk I had purchased to use as displays at craft shows, the white shelves I had purchased from Target over a decade ago and were on the walls of the apartment I lived in when Sam and I started dating. The photo of the hand writing I did as part of an assignment for my high school photography course (that photo actually graced the cover of one of my high school’s literary magazines my senior year!).
The prints above my desk I have had since Eve was born, just sitting in a pile. The glasses that thesucculents are in previously held some jewelry supplies, and before that were baby food jars. The frame for my chalkboard I got at Goodwill and repainted with a sample jar of paint I was originally considering painting the room. (I’m glad I tried it out first because it would have been too intense for the room!)
It’s still a work in progress, and it will always be a bit messy because that’s just who I am (which is why I didn’t fix up the clutter for the photos). But I am so much happier now! Whereas at the end of 2015 going in there stressed me out, I now look forward to sitting down at my desk in the morning and working. Let’s just hope I can keep it as organized throughout the year!
