Have you ever wanted to plan a party for your child, but found yourself coming short on ideas for a theme or just found yourself scrambling to buy everything you need? Samantha Munoz (and her mom) is here to help!
Samantha is a self-described “nap time hustler” creative who is pursuing her love of paper crafts to create a party kit business with her mom. As she explained to me, “We specialize in creating and curating handcrafted themed party kits filled to the brim with creations made here at Samjoco HQ as well as those of other makers. We like to believe as our business grows, we help other small businesses grow as well.”
Samantha is mama to Addison Jane, age 1 (how adorable is her daughter!), and from what I can tell from her photos and business, is one fun-loving mom.

Tell us a little bit about your business and how you got started. What inspired you to start a handmade business?
My business is Samjoco Celebrations, a unique party supply company. We create party kits filled with everything necessary for the perfect celebration, featuring amazing and exclusive handcrafted goods.
I have always been creative and in recent years I have really explored my creativity. I started a DIY blog with 2 of my cousins in late 2014 (which we still write tutorials on, occasionally) and during that time I finished several projects ranging from paintings to origami. I tried tons of different crafts and realized I loved working with paper. I would create paper hand puppets and paper clips for planners and I just love working with the medium and putting together intricate pieces. For our business, I primarily create the paper goods (3D party favor box, cupcake toppers, etc.) and I love every minute of it. My mother is my business partner and she does a lot of creations as well, her favorite part is creating innovative designs for cake toppers and décor.
One thing that makes our business unique is that we also incorporate the handcrafted goods of other makers. We aren’t the jacks of all trades, we aren’t talented at every aspect of what we sell. So instead of doing it ourselves, we seek those that are experts in their creative fields and mediums and include their work in our kits. That way, we ensure our party kits are filled with only the best handmade goods, by the most artistic and skilled of hands. It’s amazing.
What do you like best about having your own business? What are some of your biggest challenges?
I greatly enjoy the fact that we get to make our own rules about how it runs. I love the flexibility in knowing that if we decide to change course, completely redo our website or create unique and out of the box products, it’s all ok because it is ours. However, that is also a double-edged sword. Many creative entrepreneurs, ourselves included, struggle with focus and having too many ideas. Sometimes it is hard to parse through a plethora of ideas and only choose the gems. I have found that the more we stay organized and understand our mission and our core values, the easier it is to make choices between which projects to move forward with.
How do you manage life as a business owner and a parent? What tips would you offer for other moms thinking about starting their own business?
I am a “nap time” hustler, meaning I get most of my business work done while my daughter is napping and on the weekends when my husband is here to help me. She occasionally goes off to daycare and those times are sacred focus times. I always make sure that I have a handy list of things that need to get done for big projects before naptime, daycare or the weekends so I can use that precious time to get stuff done. I think that one thing that really helps me with my business is knowing my husband is on board and is supportive. While he may not always want to hear about all my 1,000,000 ideas and latest party trends, he is always willing to take AJ off my hands when I need to work. I am extremely grateful to have his support.
I love the idea of mothers, especially stay at home moms, starting their own businesses and I encourage my friends all the time to do so. I think the biggest tip I can offer is to figure out what you’re good at, what can be profitable and just go for it. Stay as organized as you can (calendars, checklists, planners, whatever it is you like to use) and make sure you have set goals and tasks. Finally, understand that it’s not fair to compare where you’re at to someone else…especially if they do not have children. Having babies and a business is crazy and can be stressful at times, but it’s also incredibly rewarding and an excellent outlet if you feel like you want something that’s yours.
How does having these creative outlets benefit you in your role as a mom? How do you involve your children in your creative work?
Having my business is an amazing way for me to feel productive and focused on a daily basis. Honestly for the season of life I am in right now, my business has saved me from becoming something I don’t want to be. I am extremely driven and passionate and I think if I didn’t have a creative outlet like this and something that is also profitable so I can feel like I contribute to our income, I wouldn’t feel as happy as I do. My daughter is still so little, so “involving” her in my creative work mostly involves me running after her as she grabs my party supplies and materials, ha!
When you are not working on your business, what do you like to do with your time?
I am pursuing a commissioning as an officer in the US Navy so I have been spending a lot of my “extra” time training and getting ready for the next steps. I hope to soon be able to answer this question with “going to work as a Naval Officer”. To relax, I love spending time with my family exploring the world, taking a nice bath or watching some reality TV.
