How often do your purchases reflect your values?
With access to cheap products at the push of a button that appear at your doorstep within a day or two, it’s easy to buy what’s convenient rather taking the time to see if the products we buy and companies we support align with our values.
Believe me, I’ve been there. And I know how difficult it can be to change your mindset.
However, as a mom of two young girls, I have become increasingly conscious of how the products I purchase have an impact on their future.
Shopping with your values
Being a maker in a business created for value-driven women, I try to keep the following values in mind when I make a purchase:
- Mindfully Made — It’s made either in the U.S. or is Fair Trade, and as much as I can I support fellow artisans
- Durability — I like products that are made well and won’t need to be replaced quickly (and add to all that junk in landfills)
- Sustainability — The company makes efforts to be more eco-friendly
- Versatility — I’m somewhat of a minimalist and like things that can be worn or used in multiple ways
It’s not always easy, and I sometimes find myself backsliding. My time is limited and it’s usually so much easier to buy what’s easy and ignore my values.
This seems to be particularly true when it comes to buying watches.
For some reason, I’ve really struggled the past few years with finding a watch that aligns with my values.
I’ve tried to go without having one, but I feel naked without it. Plus, I found myself looking at my phone more often to check the time.
Recently when I was looking at a blog that promoted sustainable fashion and I saw JORD watches on the list, I remembered about reading about the company on several friends’ blogs and decided to get one for myself!
After perusing their website, I went with the Cassia Watch. Made from olive wood with a domed sapphire crystal glass, it’s a stunning artisan-designed accessory that meets most of my value requirements.
Olive wood is a more sustainable wood in that it’s not listed as an endangered species. Plus, as I learned in my conversations with them, much of the wood for JORD watches are from furniture scraps! The sapphire glass covering is one of the hardest and most scratch resistant materials, which means a more durable watch.
(Perfect for playtime with a grabby infant!)
