Is it me, or is coconut oil all the rage? I swear every fifth pin in my Pinterest feed features coconut oil and/or essential oils. (Or maybe that’s just very telling of the types of boards I follow!)
But seriously, coconut oil is pretty amazing. I bought a jar of it originally after I took a baby massage class. I don’t know why, but it seemed less weird to me to massage Eve with coconut oil rather than olive oil. Plus, being dairy-free due to nursing said infant I found myself turning to coconut-based products more and more. Not to mention coconut oil smells absolutely amazing!
It turns out you can save a bunch of money on beauty products by replacing them with coconut oil. Not only is it good for the wallet, but you are limiting the number of nasty chemicals to which you are exposing yourself. Seriously, there’s some crazy stuff in beauty products! With a jar of the good stuff sitting in my pantry I decided I really want to try it out to make my own DIY body products. As it is, I have been moving toward more natural body and beauty products in the last few years, so it makes sense to make to try to make some of my own products where I know what’s going into them! Here are a few coconut oil DIY’s I’m really looking forward to trying out. Maybe I’ll make one for one of my crafty date nights with Sam.
1. Coconut oil lotion bars
These coconut oil lotion bars from The Coconut Mama are great for dry hands when you’re on the go and they only require three ingredients! (And is it me, but would an Altoid’s tin make for a great tin to make this in?)
2. Cinnamon Coffee Body Scrub
What could be a more invigorating (and delicious-smelling!) way to start the day than exfoliating with coffee and cinnamon? More Than a Mom of Three shares this super easy DIY tutorial. And now I know what to use my coffee grounds for next time!
3. Apricot Facial Scrub
I have been purchasing a name-brand apricot facial scrub for years. While I really like how it smells, I don’t like the laundry list of ingredients. Blooming in Bedlam shares an amazingly easy tutorial for making your own apricot scrub using coconut oil!
4. Calming bedtime foot rub
I’ve heard the amazing calming benefits certain essential oils can have on your feet. Combining them with coconut oil they make a pretty great way to also moisturize dry, cracked feet. After the winter we’ve had, my feet could use some TLC. I cannot wait to try this bedtime foot rub by Adventures of Mel!
5. Vanilla Cinnamon Latte Body Scrub
Similar to the coffee body scrub listed above, this one by Nutiva also incorporates vanilla and coconut sugar. I’ll admit, I had never heard of coconut sugar until a year ago when I was making a recipe that called for it, but I keep seeing it more and more.
Have you ever used coconut oil for cooking or making beauty products?
