Back when I was a gawky and socially awkward middle schooler with a mouth full of metal, I went to see the movie Clueless in the theater with the other 11-to-14-year-old campers at my Jewish overnight camp.
While many of the sexual innuendos likely went over my innocent 12-year-old mind at the time, there was one thing that stood out to me: the outfits. The main character, Cher, was a popular and stylish 16-year-old living in Beverly Hills. I’m pretty sure that, thanks to the movie and her character, tiny plaid skirts paired with over-the-knee socks were all the rage in 1995.
I remember pouring through Teen magazine, imagining returning to school looking this stylish. I had these visions of me strutting down the hallways, my purple L.L. Bean backpack casually slung on my shoulder, the epitome of cool.
Sadly, the closest I came to replicating this outfit was a plaid jumper paired with an off-white turtleneck and matching leggings.
Me channeling my inner Cher, obviously
Thankfully my sense of style — and execution — has improved a bit over the years.
That said, despite being in an industry that is veeeeeery loosely tied to fashion, I’m still rather clueless [see what I did there!] when it comes styling my jewelry for other people. I know how to put together a somewhat cohesive style for myself that incorporates my own jewelry designs about 90% of the time, but ask me to come up with fashion tips for the general public and I’m at a total loss.
I’d say that’s a bit of an improvement!
I wish I had that gene in me, but I have decided to leave that up to the professionals.
Fortunately for you, I have partnered with Roxanne Carne, a Washington, DC-based Personal Stylist & Shopper that helps women who are in a wardrobe style rut by defining signature looks that work for their busy lifestyle.
Roxanne is a graduate of the School of Style – the leading program for stylists in the U.S. – and holds certifications in Personal & Fashion Styling. Her styling work has been recognized as the “Best Of” three years running, and has been featured on Fox, CBS, ABC, The Washington Post, REVEAL Magazine, and more!
If you’ve ever wondered what jewelry and clothes pair well together, Roxanne’s got you covered. She put together a fantastic post with minimalist and sustainable fashion essentials to pair with select pieces from my new Toula jewelry line.

I loved Clueless and I was a senior in high school when it came out. I saw it in the movie theater, too with friends. I was a bit “Clueless” fashion wise back then though, too. But still tried my hardest to emulate Cher and her friend’s fashion sense. So you just brought me back with this post tonight totally. Now heading over to check out the pairings, as well 🙂
Haha, I’m sure there were many of us who were clueless about fashion back then 😉
I don’t have the gene either. I can sometimes fake it with a nice coat and boots, but whoa.. clueless here too!
I can’t wait to see the pairings myself.
I am so far from stylish, I feel like a baked potato most of the time. Just average, clean but nothing special! I wish I were more like my Mom and sister! They wear big, dangling earrings and big necklaces. I don’t have the DNA necessary to feel comfortable in those things. I think I’m really dressed up in my Seiko watch, gold chain around my neck and ear buds! Lordy, I need help! But I LOVE to make jewelry for the brave ones to wear. That is my expression!
We definitely all express ourselves in different ways! I tend to have a more understated, minimalist style (and rarely branch out from solid colors) because that’s what I’m most comfortable in. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with a clean look 🙂
