You know what was amazing about yesterday? I could walk around outside in a t-shirt. A t-shirt! Just last week it was in the 30s and even snowed a bit, so the fact that it actually felt like spring was just about the most incredible thing since sliced bread. (I was seriously starting to worry that it would just never get warm around here ever again.) While I ready to pack away my heavy coat and throw away my snow boots that barely survived their eighth and final winter, the one thing I will miss are the cute winter accessories. There is seriously nothing cozier than wearing a pair of comfy jeans, a sweater, and a thick-knit sweater during the cold winter months. Katty Hertas adorable chunky knitwear makes me slightly nostalgic for that first snowstorm. Her work, which uses 100% vegan yearn, features an adorable selection of hats, scarves and even capes! One look at her work and you’ll be wishing for the cooler months again. Well, almost.
Tell us a little bit about your work and how you got started with it.
Hi, I’m Katty. I live in Miami with my husband and our two cats. I run Katty’s Handcrafts, where I make hand-knitted and crocheted accessories from vegan yarn. I also spend my time painting, drawing, taking photos and more recently doing ceramics, which I hope to incorporate into my store soon.
My knitting addiction began with my grandmother, who used to send me beautiful knitted garments. Once, when she came to visit, she taught me the basics; I’ve been knitting ever since.
What do you like most about having your own creative business? What do you find most challenging?
I definitely enjoy the freedom of it. I can completely be myself and at the same time experiment! This of course, doesn’t mean is not hard work, in fact I don’t think I have ever work harder but at the end it pays off.
What inspires you to create?
I’m inspired by Mother Nature’s color combinations and textures. I find every waking moment to be truly inspiring – frankly; I wish I didn’t have to sleep. There are so many great ideas and so little time!
What do you think motivates others to buy handmade?
The greatest thing about buying handmade is that you know you are buying from a “real” person. You are not encouraging sweatshops all around the globe and you help another person to make a living out of what they love.
Also when you buy handmade you know most of the times it is made with love and every detail was taken care of.
What is your favorite handmade item you have bought or received?
My most precious handmade possession is a knitted cape that my grandma made for me, it is so unique and you can feel the love in every stitch. Once I receive it I knew I wanted to learn too.
When you are not making art what do you like to do with your time?
Basically I’m always creating, I don’t really have much free time but when I do I love to spend it outside enjoying nature or playing with my two cats, they are the cutest.
What is something people might not know about you?
People may not know I am currently completing my bachelor in fine arts! Also that I have been married for three years.
What is one piece of advice you would offer to others with their own creative business?
Don’t give up. It make take you a while before it is the success you want it to be but if you love it, be persistent and it will eventually pay off. Trust me!
Thank you for joining me on my blog, Katty, and be sure to check out Katty’s Handcrafts!
